I haven’t written one of these articles for a while, so apologies for that, everyone. But, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been banging my head against a wall recently trying to find some decent free games for you all to play on Android.

Sorry, just adjusting my bandage. Where was I?

Ah, yes. This week, I have mostly been playing the interesting Island Fortress. This game is best described as a ‘reverse Angry Birds’ title, in which you set up defensive towers to prevent pirates from stealin’ you’ booty! Arr.

The presentation is top-notch, with some smooth animations and strong physics, while the calming sounds of creaking masts give it quite a relaxing atmosphere. A surprise given the amount of cannon balls that get fired at your ramshackle constructions.

Pirate Bay

Like those Birds wot are Angry, there’s very much a trial-and-error feel to the gameplay, especially considering the cannons from the pirate ship fire out at predetermined (but not shown) angles.

It’s not the perfect demonstration of this sub-sub-genre, for it’s too easy to drop the various materials in the ocean accidentally, but it's good for brightening up a train ride.

You can grab Island Fortress from the Android Market right now for the princely sum of nothing [download].

Stay tuned for more top free games once I finish my course of antibiotics.
