|

Welcome to another tantalising edition of Pocket Gamer's free game round-up - a feature that highlights the top App Store titles that have been made free in the past 24 hours.

Today, we have an angry cephalopod, waves of aliens, some terrorists, more aliens, and a guy who loves to jump.

As always, prices in the App Store frequently change without warning, so you should go and grab these freebies post-haste.

Remember: let us and your fellow readers know about any other great free apps in our comments section below.

Destructopus: Total Rampage! (iPhone)

In Destructopus: Total Rampage!, you assume the role of an angry monster, who sets out to reap revenge on the oil-hungry industrialists that have polluted the world's atmosphere.

Your mission involves levelling whole towns and cities, battling waves of enemies, and defeating huge bosses with your laser eye, sharp claws, and other powers.

An update post-launch brought support for Apple's social gaming network Game Center to Destructopus: Total Rampage!, meaning you can bag yourself some rather fancy - but ultimately very virtual - achievements for your efforts.

Mr.AahH!! (iPhone)

Mr.AahH!! hands you three lives and asks you to guide its protagonist safely across treacherous cliffs to the end of each of the game's stages.

You do this by tapping your device's screen to ensure that the little stick-like man lands firmly on solid ground. If he reaches terra firma, you're awarded points. Marvellous.

As you progress, you'll have to tackle issues like wind speed. Game Center offers leaderboards.

Sentinel 2: Earth Defense (iPhone)

Sentinel 2: Earth Defense burdens you with the responsibility of protecting planet earth from outer space invaders.

You do this across two different game modes - Assault and Endurance - by deploying a selection of varied towers and mobile attack drones, and upgrading your defences to achieve powerful special moves.

OpenFeint offers leaderboards, achievements, chat, and more. Oh, and OpenFeint's Free Game of the Day initiative is the reason Sentinel 2: Earth Defense is gratis today.

Retro Dust (iPhone)

Space shooter Retro Dust tasks you with blasting your way through waves of meteors and aliens.

There are five game modes for you to tackle - Arcade, Invasion, Time, Super Chunk, Survival - four different ships to pilot, two different difficulty modes to attempt, and a selection of graphical skin styles to choose from.

Apple's social gaming network Game Center provides leaderboards and achievements.

Blast Fighter (Universal)

Blast Fighter sees you take on the role of fighter pilot Michael, as you protect Europe from a terrorist organisation known as Titan.

In order to accomplish your mission, you'll have to overcome a selection of enemy air and ground units, upgrade your weapon systems, and blast each level's boss to smithereens.

There are a massive 72 missions spread across six maps, six different fighters, and a whole host of deadly weapons.

Land-a Panda (iPhone)

Land-a Panda is a fact-paced puzzler that sees you attempt to unite two love-struck bearlike mammals by firing one of them out of a big cannon. I know.

Naturally, that's not as easy as it first sounds, with lots of obstacles and enemies getting in the way of your quest for love. You'll also need to collect three golden coins from each level if you want to achieve maxmum points.

Both OpenFeint and Game Center are on hand for bragging rights.
