Following the tie-up with Beats Audio and the release of the HTC Titan, it wasn't unexpected to see a new phone that combined the huge display of the Titan with the audio power from the recently announced Sensation XE. The latest HTC smartphone packs in the same 4.7-inch screen as the Windows Phone-based Titan, while switching allegiance to the Android operating system. The Sensation XL comes with HTC's very latest version of the Sense UI (V3.5) and also gets a turbocharged 1.5GHz dual-core processor. With its 8-megpixel camera, with the same backside illuminated sensor seen on handsets like the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc/arc S and ray, or Apple's iPhone 4S, plus up to 16GB of internal memory, the Sensation XL should sit at the top of the HTC tree for quite a while. Well, going by recent HTC launches - that means at least a few weeks at least! The phone is slim too, at just 9.9mm thick (the full dimensions are 132.5x70.7x9.9mm).
Finally, let's not forget the Beats Audio connection. With the combination of high-end set of in-ear headphones (worth £80) bunded in the box, plus all the clever software audio processing integrated within the phone, the Sensation XL also promises to give one of the best possible audio experiences from a smartphone. Of course, that's what HTC says. Let's wait and see until we get one to properly test it out...

From starting out as a games tester for Mastertronic, Virgin and Sega in the late 1980s, it may seem odd to then ditch everything to write about mobile phones that, at the time, lasted 20 minutes between charges. He always had a hunch mobiles would become quite popular, but possibly didn't realise how powerful (and, ironically, returning to 20 minutes between charges). Jonathan's job is to continue advising on the best hardware to buy, in order to enjoy games that have advanced considerably since those long days and nights testing Double Dragon on the C64.
