Apple has announced that Steve Jobs died on Wednesday. He was 56.

The former chief executive and co-founder of Apple had been battling pancreatic cancer since 2004.

"Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives," said a statement from the company.

"The world is immeasurably better because of Steve."

His death comes a day after Apple unveiled the new iPhone 4S.
