Konami's PES 2012 - Pro Evolution Soccer for iOS is a freemium game, out now

To the surprise of the Pocket Gamer team, the latest iPhone and iPad iteration of the popular Pro Evolution Soccer franchise is a freemium download, which allows you to unlock extra content through in-app purchases.

Your initial download will net you Quick Match, Super Challenge, and Challenge modes, and a bunch of community features, with a £3.99/$5.99 in-app outlay giving you access to Exhibition, UEFA, League Cup, and Multiplayer offerings.

This year's release features brand-new game modes, such as Super Challenge mode, which allows you to to create your own team from a pool of the world's best players.

Once you've created a team, you can download similar teams from your buddies, battle it out, and post your scores to Facebook for everyone to see.

Final whistle

Other tweaks to the franchise mean that players can now move both on and off the ball, with goalkeepers now closing down attacks, claiming loose balls, and reacting acrobatically to save goals.

A selection of new crowd jeers and cheers, support for Apple's Retina display, a host of unlockable teams and balls, and an all new stadium have also managed to make it to the pitch.

You can check out PES 2012 - Pro Evolution Soccer on the App Store completely free of charge.
