The iCade, if you don't know, is a Bluetooth controller styled after a classic arcade cabinet, designed especially for the iPad.

It started life as a simple April Fool's joke, but was subsequently licensed and produced by Ion Audio.

If you're thinking of splashing some cash on one of these beauties (£79.99 from Firebox), you're probably wondering about the games you can play with it. We don't blame you.

That's why we've put together this list of the top ten games to play on the iCade Arcade Cabinet for iPad.

Atari's Greatest Hits

Atari's Greatest Hits is a collection of over 100 classic arcade and Atari 2600 titles, such as Pong, Lunar Lander, Crystal Castles, and Centipede.

The free app comes with a complimentary copy of Missile Command, with further games available in packs through in-app purchase for 69p/99c a pop. You can also grab the entire collection for £10.49/$14.99

Every game comes with its original cabinet and box art, and select titles such as Warlords and Tempest even come with head-to-head Bluetooth multiplayer.

Emerald Mine

Emerald Mine is another classic title - this time from the days of the Amiga - that sees you playing as a miner trapped underground.

Your job over the game's whopping 3440 levels is to collect gems to open exits and avoid obstacles like exploding bugs, acid pools, and aliens.

Two game modes are on offer - Timed and Relaxed - with the game's classic art and sounds all present.

Velocispider

Velocispider is a retro arcade shoot-'em-up in which you play a heavily armoured araknasaur (half spider, half velociraptor).

Your aim is to defend your endangered eggs by defeating wave after wave of aquatic robot beasties.

The game features "sweet pixel art" and "thumping tunes", as well as Game Center integration for both leaderboards and achievements.

Compression HD

Compression HD is a Tetris-esque block-dropping game that offers multilayered randomly generated levels.

There are two different game modes to play through – Classic and Blocked – levels that increase in both speed and difficulty as you progress, and OpenFeint leaderboards and achievements to grab.

Plum Crazy

Plum Crazy tasks you with guiding a juicy hero around jelly mazes full to the brim with dangerous obstacles in order to squish as many plums (oof!) as possible.

The game's 24 levels contain a range of dangerous hazards to avoid, such as slicers, rollers, and rotten tomatoes, with a further three mini-games rounding out the action.

Game Center is on board if you fancy trying to top leaderboards or collect achievements.

Mos Speedrun

Mos Speedrun is a fast-paced 8-bit retro platformer that allows you to record your best level runs before uploading them for the world to see.

Your aim is to run and jump over obstacles, avoid bees, zombies, and other hazards, and reach the end of each level in the fastest time possible. If you die – which you will – you'll be accompanied through the level by a ghost of your previous runs.

Game Center is supported for both leaderboards and achievements.

Super Mega Worm

Super Mega Worm is another retro-looking title that tasks you – a Great Death Worm known as Wojira – with destroying puny humans and their inventions.

You do this over 24 "action-packed" levels and two game modes by popping out from underground, gobbling them up, smashing into them, and utilising three super abilities.

You now also get Super Mega Worm VS. Santa - a Christmas-themed game that adds another 15 levels and a boss fight with the fat man himself.

OpenFeint and Game Center are both supported, the latter for leaderboards and achievements.

Sideways Racing

Sideways Racing drags you back to the days of top-view racers and invites you to nitro boost your way around nine different tracks against nine other racers.

There are destructive pick-ups to grab, Game Center achievements to bag, leaderboards to top, and three different game modes to compete in.

League mode sees you outracing and outpacing your opponents to unlock new tracks, Knockout mode requires successive wins to progress, and Time Trial pits your hunk of metal against the clock.

Silverfish Max

Silverfish Max is a popular App Store shooter that pits you against wave after wave of relentless space bugs, with only your reflexes and a number of power-ups on hand to help you survive.

There are four game modes to play through – Reaper, Onslaught, Scavenger, Haste – each tasking you with destroying enemies, collecting tasty Protons, and clearing waves in the fastest time possible.

You can compete for 22 Game Center achievements and attempt to own the five leaderboards.

Space Inversion

Space Inversion is a colourful Space Invaders-alike title that sees you facing off against invading aliens.
