The Metroid series is now 25 years old, with the first title originally released on the NES on August 6th, 1986.

The franchise has seen a number of handheld releases, including the likes of Metroid II: Return of Samus, and a GBA remake of the original title that started it all, called Metroid: Zero Mission.

The Nintendo DS saw two Metroid releases: Metroid Prime Hunters and Metroid Prime Pinball, both of which were excellent additions to the almighty series.

Current 3DS owners will most likely be ploughing their way through another of the Metroid titles soon, Metroid Fusion, as the game is being given away for free via the Ambassador service.

VG247 has compiled a list of the notable tributes that went up on the net over the weekend, so you can revel in Metroid love.
