PopCap promised a Retina display update was on the way for iPhone hit Plants vs Zombies, and the developer hasn't disappointed.

“We have now accumulated enough brains and zombie body parts to bring you Retina support for Plants vs Zombies!”

Awesome spangly graphics aren't the only new inclusion, though, with speed optimisations and a bunch of bug fixes also present and accounted for.

Headless

Plants vs Zombies earned a prestigious Pocket Gamer Gold Award at review, and even managed to bag itself a Pocket Gamer 2011 Award for Best Strategy/Simulation Game.

If you're yet to play the undead-filled defend-'em-up (firstly, where the hell have you been?) you're tasked with protecting your humble abode from stumbling, running, swimming, flying, and even dancing zombies.

You don't do this with revolvers, shotguns, and flamethrowers, as you might expect, though: instead, you deploy a pot-pourri of plants.

These range from peashooters to explosive mushrooms and cherries, and even include weird water things (it's a technical term, forgive me).

You can grab Plants vs Zombies from the App Store for £1.99 / $2.99 / €2.39.
