Our cultural love of ants may have peaked in the late 1990s with the likes of Bug's Life and Antz, but Finnish outfit Prank is bringing the little critters back into play with its cute iPad arcade strategy game Ant Raid.

Taking control of various ant bases, you have to launch them into action against insect foes that have been mutated by exposure to pesticides.

Group control is easily handled as you hold down on the touchscreen to trigger a selection circle and create a group of ants. You then tap on enemies to send them into battle.

After this is complete, the surviving ants will head back to base to heal, although some enemies will stun them when they're destroyed, meaning you'll have to send out another group to recover the original batch. Adding variation to the gameplay, you have direct attacks so you can tap on enemies to splat them, although such power is obviously time limited.

Beautifully presented in terms of graphics, audio and cinematic storyline, Ant Raid has four chapters with 15 levels in each, plus four endless Survival modes and 40 challenges. In total, there are 300 stars to collect plus achievements, something tracked via Game Center.

Available for iPad, Ant Raid is available now, priced $2.99, €2.39 or £1.79.
