Seeking inspiration from public game companies' announcements of financial sales numbers every three months, Qualityindex.com has decided to publish its own quarterly figures.

But, rather than bombard you with talk of operating profit, the Quality Index quarterly round-up ranks the top 20 best-reviewed iPhone games released during the period April 1st - June 30th, 2011.

Simple as that.

As for the reviews themselves, Qualityindex.com boasts over 75,000 of them from the world's leading online sources, including 148Apps, Slide to Play, Pocket Gamer, and Macworld.

In a World of its own

The highest-rated iPhone game this quarter was 2D Boy's physics-based puzzler World of Goo, whose metamorphosis from indie PC phenomenon to engaging iPhone essential couldn't have been smoother.

Kyle Gabler and Ron Carmel's imaginatively crafted tower-building title soared to new heights on the Quality Index chart, assembling a 9.3 score from a septet of critiques.

Like World of Goo, Capybara Games's Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP Micro debuted to universal praise on iPad before being adapted to its smaller sibling's touchscreen.

And like World of Goo, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP Micro suffered not one iota from this iOS conversion process, its evocative visual and musical style complemented masterfully by the puzzling mysteries at the heart of this action-adventure.

He's got a lovely First Touch

While both 2D Boy and Capybara Games tasted incredible success with their maiden iPhone presentations in the second fiscal quarter of 2011, X2 Games mesmerized the global press corps with a reboot of an old favourite.

First Touch Soccer was the natural heir to the X2 Football series on Apple's mobile platform upon its release in early-May, delivering a superior control mechanism and an online multiplayer experience that are anything but, well, Messi.

With this hat-trick of high-class performers attaining an extraordinary Qi score of 9.3, the bar has been officially raised for all who follow on the App Store between now and September.

See you back here then, Pocket Gamer pickers.

iPhone Quality Index's Top 20 games of Q2 2011

Methodology #1

To qualify for a Quality Index rating, a game must have received three or more reviews from the 60+ sites that feed into Qi's database. Methodology #2

In the event of a 'tie', titles are separated in the first instance by number of reviews - the higher the total, the better. Should the number of reviews also be identical, the Quality Index rating comes back into play, for while we only display the average score to one decimal place, the list is generated to further significant figures. You can always keep up to date with the hottest-reviewed iPhone games at the Quality Index.
