LoveFilm: Monkey Ball 3D still available to rent despite 'game storage-disc-thing' because it's a puzzle game

Rentals of Resident Evil 3D would 'totally spoil it'

LoveFilm: Monkey Ball 3D still available to rent despite 'game storage-disc-thing' because it's a puzzle game

Pocket Gamer revealed earlier this week that game rental service LoveFilm is refusing to rent out copies of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D due to the fact that players can't delete save data from the cartidge.

However, we noticed that LoveFilm did allow rentals of Super Monkey Ball 3D, despite the fact that the Sega-published game doesn't allow players to delete save data either.

We contacted the company to find out why, and received the following response from a LoveFilm spokesperson:

"It is an issue with these two games recoding (sic) on the game storage-disc-thing how far you have got. Which means that whoever gets the disc-thing first and plays the game will then store that and the next person will see all the levels, achievements, and items and things unlocked already, which takes a lot of the enjoyment out."

Just in case that wasn't clear enough, the spokesperson continued, "Because Resident Evil is a linear game this will totally spoil it, so we have opted not to rent it. Super Monkey Ball is not a linear game but a puzzle game, so it is less of a problem and therefore still available to rent."

So, Super Monkey Ball 3D is still available to rent because the previous save data on the "game storage-disc-thing" does not detract from the enjoyment for subsequent players.
