'More familiar suits' planned for Super Mario 3D

It isn't all about Tanooki

'More familiar suits' planned for Super Mario 3D

Super Mario 3D director Yoshiaki Koizumi has been speaking to Official Nintendo Magazine about the forthcoming 3DS game and has hinted that the Tanooki Suit isn't the only outfit to make a comeback.

"I can't reveal the actual number of power-ups in the game right now," said Koizumi, "but suffice to say that we do try to include enough so that people can enjoy a variety of different kinds of play experiences in the title."

He was, however, able to tease us all with the suggestion that Mario won't just be donning a pair of ears and a fluffy tail. "I can say that we will definitely have some more familiar suits than just the Tanooki Suit," Koizumi confirmed.

The Tanooki Suit has been downgraded from its appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3, as Mario is no longer able to fly nor turn into a statue - though he still has a tail attack, and the ability to hover a little longer in mid-air while jumping.

So what other suits will Mario take out of mothballs for his 3D adventure? SMB3's Frog Suit would seem an evens favourite, with the Hammer Suit a dark horse bet and Kuribo's Shoe as the rank outsider.

Super Mario 3D is set for a worldwide release at some point in the fourth quarter of this year, and is looking pretty darn spiffy, as the below trailer amply demonstrates.
