Rumour: Teardrop-shaped iPhone 5 to ship in August

September iPod touch event may be brought forward

Rumour: Teardrop-shaped iPhone 5 to ship in August
|

Apple tends to announce new iPhone models in June. Last year tech site Gizmodo messed the schedule up a bit by buying a stolen iPhone 4 prototype and writing about it at length in April, but it wasn't until June that Apple officially acknowledged the device's existence.

This year is different. Steve Jobs tacitly confirmed the rumours of an iPhone 5 delay earlier this month at WWDC by failing to announce the hardware upgrade, and the general consensus, following a story on Reuters, is that iPhone 5 will be available in September.

Except there's a new rumour. According to respected tech site Boy Genius Report, iPhone 5 will be announced during an event at the beginning or middle of August, and it'll ship by the end of the month. If true, this either means the traditional September iPod event will be brought forward, or iPhone 5 will have an event all to itself.

And why, if it's getting it, might iPhone 5 deserve this special treatment?

According to
Thisismynext, and contrary to earlier reports that iPhone 5 will look largely the same as iPhone 4, the device will feature a radical new tapered 'teardrop' design. Except, unlike a teardrop, it'll be thick at the top and thin at the bottom. More like a carrot or a stalactite.

Expect dozens more rumours before iPhone 5 finally sees the light of day.
