Pokemaniacs were happier than a sleeping Snorlax to grab a free Pokedex from the virtual store shelves of the 3DS eShop.
But actually using the doodad, and filling the 152 empty slots with 152 pocket monsters, is a whole 'nother kettle of Magikarp.
To find all of Black and White's critters you'll need to trade, download, scan, and be patient. Here's Pocket Gamer's guide to grabbing those elusive critters and filling your 'dex with ease.
Download new Pokemon over SpotPass
Every day, Nintendo will shower you with three new Pokemon via SpotPass downloading. Check your 3DS homescreen each morning and you should see a blue dot over the Pokedex 3D icon. Tap the icon to load the app.
A message will pop up, telling you that a new critter is available. Hit 'okay', and the game will download a monster that you don't have yet - be it a Swoobat or a Sigilyph. It's entirely random which 'mon you'll get, but you can increase the odds of getting any one character by scanning its AR marker.
Once you have your monster, quit out of the app and load it up again. You'll get your second Pokemon for the day. Close it again, and load it again, to receive your third. Don't miss your daily SpotPass - if you don't download your three monsters today, you won't get six tomorrow.
Scan AR markers to get legendary Pokemon
Pokedex 3D uses AR Markers to display your favourite monsters in augmented reality (which uses the camera and the 3DS screen to make it look like they're chilling out in real world scenarios) and scan in new monsters.
You can't scan in every monster - that would let you finish your 'dex in twenty minutes. Instead, unlocked critters will show up as silhouettes and won't be added to your database (though it will increase the likelihood of seeing that Pokemon in your next daily download).
There are a handful you can scan in, though: secret, legendary and uber-powerful monsters like Victini, Cobalion, Terrakion, and Zekrom. Here are your AR markers for those mammoth 'mons - simply hit the gear icon in the top-right corner, tap AR viewer, and then point your camera at these markers.;
Trade with pals
In the options menu, you can use the 'Give' and 'Get' buttons to trade your Pokemon collection with other 3DS-toting buddies over a local wireless connection.
Find a worthy Pokemon in your collection and hit the gear icon. Now tap 'Give' to start a connection with a buddy. They should tap 'Get' to receive your amicable offering.
You can use this function to send and receive up to three Pokemon a day. If you don't have any friends, you'll be stuck with SpotPass.
Fill your sticker book, get items
The Pokedex 3D comes with a sticker book, accessible by clicking the gear icon and tapping sticker book.
You fill in new slots by scanning the AR marker of a Pokemon you own, and taking photographs (L or R shoulder buttons) of the critter in augmented reality.
In total you can get - thanks to different genders and seasonal versions of some of the 152 Pokemon - 164 AR stickers and 164 photo stickers. 328 overall.
You can also throw an apple at a augmented reality Pokemon by pressing the A button. It will make the Pokemon do its animation.
You'll receive bonus goodies for filling in a bunch of these sticker slots. Here are your rewards:
30 Stickers - You can now fire notes, as well as apples, at Pokemon in augmented reality. It makes the monster perform its unique cry.
50 Stickers - You can now use old Pokesnaps or images from your SD card as a background in AR mode.
70 Stickers - You can now see nine Pokemon at once in AR mode.
100 Stickers - You can now use the slider in the Scale Settings menu to change the size of your Pokemon.
150 Stickers - You've got access to the stopwatch now. This stops Pokemon mid-animation for optimum photo opportunities.
200 Stickers - You can now see ten Pokemon at once in AR mode.
250 Stickers - You can now see 11 Pokemon at once in AR mode.
Where can I get AR markers?
You're in luck! Pocket Gamer has compiled a list of all 164 AR markers, meaning you can fill your sticker book, increase the odds of seeing your favourite monster in tomorrow's SpotPass download and pose your best 'mon in augmented reality. Get scanning!
