Rumour: Apple to start selling unlocked iPhone 4s in the US this week
Would you lock at that
Rumours have begun circulating that Apple will be selling unlocked iPhone 4s in its stores from Wednesday in the United States.
The rumour appears to originate from a tweet by an iOS developer called Chronic, who went on to list the model numbers that will be offered contract-free.
This isn’t such a big story for us over in Europe - we can buy iPhones directly from Apple or choose between pretty much all national networks already - but in the US the situation is very different, with the phone restricted to just two operators, and the Apple Store forcing you to choose between them at sale.
If the rumours are true, don’t expect these unlocked models to come cheap - without any subsidy from the network, you’re looking at a significant increase in price for the privilege.
