With Sony determined to play up the connectivity between PS Vita and PlayStation 3 at this year’s E3, it was perhaps surprising that Nintendo didn’t really follow suit when discussing the future of 3DS and its new home console Wii U.

Yet, Shigeru Miyamoto has now suggested that the handheld might be able to link up to the forthcoming tablet-controlled device.

Speaking to News.com.au, the legendary Nintendo game designer answered a question about multiple controllers by hinting that the 3DS could prove useful as an additional controller.

“Our basic premise is that you can use one [tablet controller] with a system. If we got to an idea of having multiple, it might be just more convenient for people to use their Nintendo 3DS and have a way to connect that.”

This follows Satoru Iwata’s suggestion during Nintendo’s press briefing that the next Smash Bros. game could potentially be played across both devices – even if the game isn't under development yet.

Though such connectivity would seem a long way off – especially with the Wii follow-up around a year from release – it’s the first sign that Nintendo is actively looking to explore ways of linking the two consoles.
