E3 2011: Sony presentation liveblog
|

At 5pm today L.A. time (1am in the UK), Sony will deliver its E3 2011 press conference.

There'll be all sorts of bumf about the PS3, probably an apology for the recent hack-related PSN outage, and lots and lots about the NGP / PS Vita and the raft of games for it announced at the end of last week.

We'll be there in that sweaty Los Angeles conference room, sending back dispatches from the front line and, of course, making vaguely sarcastic remarks.

Check back here at 5pm / 1am for Pocket Gamer's Sony E3 2011 event liveblog or view the official stream from Sony's website here.

19:00: And that's it! Thanks very much for joining me tonight. It's now 3am here in the UK, which means I'm about to collapse.

Remember to join us for Nintendo's keynote speech tomorrow at 5pm BST where we'll find out if the big 'N' can match Sony's efforts on the portable front.

18:59: "We hope you're as excited as we are about the amazing content coming to PlayStation", says Jack - yeah, I'm pretty excited actually.

18:57: Hang on, the Euro price is the same as dollars?!

How did they work that one out?

Still, that's a decent price point. You guys agree? Let me know in the comments

18:56: So. What's the price? What's the price? - It's out in the "Holiday season this year"

Wi-Fi only will retail for $249.99 / €249 / 24,980 Yen
3G Wi Fi - $299.99 / €299.99 / 29,980 Yen

18:53: Upcoming games trail now - stuff we've just seen, mainly, plus the other confirmed titles from last week's leak like Stardust

18:52: I believe that's it for Vita "This is just a sample that's coming. There are over 80 titles in development"

18:50: Now we're being treated to a demonstration of Cole 'lighting up' the stage.

Get it? He uses lightening! Lighting u- oh forget it.

18:50: There will be a PlayStation Vita version of Street Fighter X Tekken (if you didn't already guess that). Cole from inFamous will be one of the characters.

18:48: Yes! It's Ono! He's always entertaining

18:47: Street Fighter X Tekken is up

18:45: LittleBigPlanet on Vita will include the ability to create with the touchscreen, use the camera to take photos and use them as landscapes in game, create touch-screen games, and links up to use the PS3 levels from LBP2.

Also - it looks fantastic. Did I mention that?

18:44: WipEout 2048 allows for Cross-Play that links up to 8 players online whether they're on PS3 or Vita - another aspect that other games will no doubt use in the future

18:43: Owners of the Vita version will have access to the PS3 community tracks, cars etc.

18:42: The actual game is running extremely fast. Looks good

18:40: The track editor uses touchscreen to operate, which is going to be interesting.

Oh! The rear panel is used to literally 'push up' terrain - very clever

18:39: ModNation Vita up now. Not a port (he said that twice to ensure we all got that).

18:38: We're getting early reports on a price here at Pocket Gamer towers, and it's surprisingly not bad. Stay tuned for the official reveal in a sec.

18:37: Ah, I see - you have a lair that can be attacked in real-time. Interestingly, Ruin will link up to the PS3 version via cloud saves

18:35: An action Role-playing game with multiple classes, advancement, and 'experiences'. It's an isometric dungeon crawler as far as I can see, with combo attacks and lots of lighting effects

18:34: Ruin is up next from Idle Minds.

18:31: Although the ability to trace out a path across walls is pretty neat

18:31: I bet you nobody uses the sixaxis and touch controls after the first few goes, though

18:30: Uses the touch screen for melee moves. Navigation can be performed using both physical and touch controls

18:30: Although we're watching this through an over the shoulder angle, the graphics look amazing. Animations are spot on, so is the lighting.

Really, it looks like Uncharted on a portable. Seriously impressive

18:28: Uncharted: Golden Abyss is about to be demonstrated. They've been working on it for two years now.

18:26: Party offer cross platform mobile chat using the microphone. Near is a social networking feature that adds chat and messages

18:25: Teaming up with AT&T as hotspot provider. That didn't go down well with the local crowd. Other carrier announcements will 'come soon'

18:24: Two analogue sticks, multi-touch 5" OLED screen, front and rear touchpads, six-axis motion tech, and front and back cameras "blurring the lines between reality and interactive entertainment".

Both Wi-fi and 3G models

18:24: "What you've come to know as NGP, is officially named as PlayStation Vita" - Surprise!

18:23: He's running through the specs now - lots of touchscreens, AR software through the cameras

18:22: False alarm - he's talking about the PlayStation Suite, which we already have (on Xperia Play, anyway)

18:22: "At the time, cell phones were unable to deliver the deeper and richer gaming experiences" - at the launch of the PSP

18:21: He's stressing a lot about connectivity. "A connected experience", in fact (one finger)

18:20: Here we go! NGP! Kazuo Harai is up on stage

18:19: EA exclusives? For PS3? Oh, right - it's exclusive DLC or extra gubbins, not games.

18:17: Star Trek trailer now. Looks like a 3rd person cover-based shooter set in the rebooted universe.

18:16: Back to PS3 news - Saints Row 3 and Star Trek. C'mon - don't tease us like this: More NGP news!

18:14: Aha! NGP! Ken's got one in his hands. Bioshock's coming to the NGP!

18:11: Ken Levine's up to talk more in-depth about the game. Oh, he appears to be going back on earlier comments he made about PlayStation Move.

Sony rung him up "to make [me] a believer"

Make what you will of that. Hey, but Bioshock Infinite looks good.

18:10: It's Bioshock: Infinite! Which was called a 'thinky game' by the Spike TV presenters earlier.

If you suffer from vertigo, I suggest you don't play this one (there's a lot of falling from blimps)

18:08: Looks like another slick futuristic FPS. The link up with the main game will be interesting to see.

We're not going to see it in this trailer, though.

18:06: Hilmar from CCP (Eve Online) is up on stage to talk about Dust 514 - it's a PlayStation 3 exclusive.

18:04: Sly Cooper's making a return next year on PS3. Only a CGI teaser so far, though

18:01: We're half an hour in and still no sight of the Vita/NGP. I'm fairly certain that'll change in the next 10 minutes, though

18:00: Little Big Planet 2 is getting full Move support to create levels and the like. Looks like Starhawk (sequel to Warhawk) is up next

17:58: Cole and his annoying comedy partner are back in inFamous 2. Looks exciting (no, really, I liked the original).

17:56: "PlayStation Move brings something unique to the table" - has someone briefed Jack on this drinking game?

17:55: "One to One motion control", "What you see is what you get" - I feel sorry for you drinkers.

17:53: If you're playing the Move Drinking Game, please note that 'Pinpoint accuracy' has just been said (that's two fingers)

17:51: More Move stuff - Medieval Moves. You play a floating weapon, smashing up stuff.

17:50: "It's so realistic it's frightening" says Kobe. It does look pretty good

17:50: I think there was a bit of smack talk there between Kobe and the other guy on stage, but I have no idea what they were talking about. Something about lakes, I think.

[Will doesn't know anything about basketball]

17:48: NBA12K is being demonstrated. And Kobe Bryant is up on stage to have a go.

Cue music with a ridiculously heavy bass.

17:46: We're onto Move now. It adds "more value" to your life, according to Jack. Here comes 2K Sports to hopefully not repeat that sentence.

17:45: TV, Resistance 3, and active glasses will be priced at "four-ninety-nine", which I guess is $499, not $4.99

17:43: There's going to be a PlayStation branded 3D TV. Includes that fancy two-player vision thing where two images are projected on one single screen (but each glass can only see one of the images).

Very clever.

17:42: More PS3 info - 3D God of War Origins collection. It's a re-re-release of the first two God of Wars - But In 3D!

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus collection is exciting though. It's in 3D too, by the way.

17:36: Right, it's time for Resistance 3.

17:34: Here comes the 3D Uncharted 3 trailer. For those that like that sort of thing (me)

17:31: There's been a disappointing lack of "no no no no NO!" from Drake so far.

Aha! There we go - just as I was about to hit send, too.

17:30: We'll no doubt get some gameplay footage of the NGP/Vita version later. Here's hoping, eh?

17:27: Uncharted 3 looks bloomin' lovely. You could have probably guessed that, though. Drake's currently running around a luxury liner, taking out guards the stealthy way - by hugging their necks.

That's what he does, right?

17:26: In case you're wondering why Rob sounds awfully like Will, it's because it's Will currently typing. When Rob manages to persuade Sony's Wi-fi connection to work, I'll hand back over.

17:25: It's PS3-focused right now. Here comes Uncharted 3

17:24: He's slickly moved from an apology into a rundown of the features on PSN like Netflix (US). That was slick, folks.

And CinemaNow's coming in the future.

17:22: To consumers - "You are the liveblood of the company...we are committed more than ever to making sure that the PlayStation Network experience is secure"

17:21: Jack's started by apologising and paying tribute to Sony's partners and retailers for the PSN outage

17:20: I jest of course. Right - down to business. Jack Tretton has stepped up on stage

17:16: And we're away! 3D glasses are on, promotional video of the NGP/Vita is go, and there's even some images of people playing on the Move.

Yep, that's all two people who bought the move. On tape. At the same time.

1709: (Will here - there's been a delay to the start of the presentation, so we'll resume the liveblog when it begins.)

1657: I'm here. I've been here for ages, in fact, but it took a long time for my computer to connect to Sony's wi-fi. Before that I was outside eating free food. Two minutes to go. All is darkness and thumping electronica.
