While we anxiously await the opening of Nintendo’s eShop next Monday, our friends over the pond can already start getting Excitebike-d over this new announcement from the Japanese gaming giant.

Already earmarked as a free eShop launch title in Nintendo's home territory, Excitebikes will also be gratis for an introductory period in North America.

Classic racer Excitebike will be the first in the 3D Classics series of updated NES ports to make the jump onto 3DS via the Virtual Console service.

Excitebike will boast 3D graphics and the ability to make and save up to 32 tracks. Also, just as in the old skool biker sim, riders will compete in time trials or tackle races with rivals.

Neither the length of time Excitebike will remain free for in the US and Japan, nor any info on a European release date or price has been disclosed.
