It doesn’t quite acheive the same levels of clonage (apparently not a real word) as ‘Tiny Wings’, but Star Warrior for Android does rank as one of the bolder instances of cloning on the Market.

With gameplay and, more importantly, assets blatantly ripped from PC freeware title Star Guard, it looks initially to be another case of an unscrupulous developer hoping to profit from another’s work.

But dig a little deeper into the land of the forums, and you’ll find the developer himself asking publicly if stealing someone else’s work is illegal or not, saying that he had googled, “things like ‘illegal freeware game clone’” in an effort to work it out.

“I didn't intent to blatantly rip off Star Guard and profit from another indie developer's efforts but it seems like I am.”

It certainly does seem that way, especially given that the app description for Star Warrior makes no mention of the game the developer freely admits to being inspired by, or the fact that he’s taken work made by another without permission and used it himself.
