Is 13 Samurai director Takashi Miike making an Ace Attorney film?

It appears prolific Japanese film director Takashi Miike is making a film version of the Ace Attorney games, according to an interview with The Huffington Post.

Miike, currently at the Cannes film festival to promote his latest opus, Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai, told the publication, “it is a very light comedy that I am filming now, a court drama, based on a video game, the Nintendo game DS.”

Without actually mentioning the series by name, Miike’s comments strongly suggest that a live action version of the Ace Attorney games – or Gyakuten Saiban as it is known in Japan - is in production.

Having previously been a moderate success in the east on the Game Boy Advance, the franchise leapt to prominence with the western release of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney on DS in 2005.

Despite being best known for violent and disturbing films like Ichi The Killer and Audition, Miike has proven capable of more family-friendly fare, while recent hit 13 Assassins was lauded by critics, earning an impressive Metacritic rating of 87.

We certainly wouldn't have any objections to a Miike-directed Ace Attorney film. The director's trademark humour and flair with the camera surely makes him the ideal man for the blend of drama, camp theatre, and comedy the Ace Attorney games provide.

Do you think Miike is the right choice for an Ace Attorney film? If not, who would you pick instead? Let us know in the comments below.
