Those afraid of being stuck on Froyo forever on their Galaxy handsets should be pretty chuffed with today’s news, as South Korean giant Samsung has confirmed it will be updating six models in its Galaxy range to the latest version of the OS.

This includes the Galaxy S, as well as mid-to-low range models like the Ace, Gio, Fit, and Mini.

Strangely, the original Galaxy Tab is also getting Gingerbread, despite the fact it’s a tablet, but that’s better than being stuck on Froyo forever.

The announcement comes a week after Google revealed it had signed deals with the major manufacturers that guaranteed phones would be kept up-to-date with the latest version of the Android software for 18 months after their initial release, and could be a sign of this new deal in action.

The rollout will occur through the hateful, crash-prone Kies desktop software that all Samsung handsets seem to ship with nowadays, and will begin "mid-may" in the UK and "Nordic countries", with other regions to follow.
