Bunny the Zombie Slayer

Given the large volume of zombie-killing games currently available on the App Store, it was almost inevitable that developers would run out of ideas at some point.

The only room for originality (within the now internationally recognised zombie-killing genre) is the nature of the protagonist, and ‘egg-hurling bunny rabbit’ has to qualify as one of the most bizarre heroes yet.

Despite the unusual nature of the lead character, Bunny the Zombie Slayer is a thoroughly enjoyable title, with instantly appealing action and razor-sharp presentation.

Storylines are almost certainly of no concern in this type of game, but it’s worth setting the scene. You assume the role of the titular buck-toothed zombie killer, and it’s your task to defend a garden full of innocent kiddies from waves of beastly reanimated corpses.

You do this by throwing highly explosive Easter eggs in their general direction. To unleash your powerful projectiles you have to tap and hold the screen. A crosshair appears, denoting the apex of your throw.

Once you release you finger, the egg is airborne and hopefully on its way to making destructive contact with a zombie’s ripe bonce.

As is the case in any undead horror movie, aiming for the head is the best way of taking down these slavering spooks. A direct hit to the cranium instantly disables a zombie, allowing you to move onto the next assailant.

Hitting them anywhere else merely inconveniences them - a blow to the arms will remove said limbs, but a hit on the legs forces the zombie in question to slowly crawl towards the kiddies – giving you ample time to unleash another – hopefully fatal – shot.

In addition to your standard shot you also have a super shot, which obliterates all of the zombies on-screen. These are of course in short supply, although getting three head shots in will earn you another super shot.

As the waves progress the zombie attackers become faster and more numerous, meaning that every single shot counts and head hits are of vital importance.

Ultimately, though, you’re merely playing to get the best score. The game simply keeps on going until a zombie manages to break into the garden, and you’ve little option but to restart and try to last a little longer.

There are two other modes – one which gives you a set number of waves to survive and another which is set against a two minute time limit – but essentially there’s little in the way of variety here.

However, that’s not to say that Bunny the Zombie Slayer isn’t great at what it does. The gameplay is immediate and addictive, and the cartoon visuals look amazing. Amusing sound effects add more lustre to the overall package.

The appeal of Bunny the Zombie Slayer isn’t going to last forever, and chances are you’ll tire of the basic gameplay within the space of a few weeks, but while it lasts the game delivers an undeniable buzz.
