id Software's Rage not coming to Android any time soon

Those hoping to see some of the more graphically cutting-edge iOS games winging their way over to high-end Android phones were dealt another blow today as John Carmack -technical director of id Software - confirmed that the company isn't currently working on any Android release.

Speaking to NowGamer, the creator of Doom and countless other legendary first-person shooters said that while he does check to see if Android is a viable route "every six months", it's unlikely we'll see any of the Rage titles making their way to the platform any time soon.

This is mainly due to financial rather than technical issues, "When I asked [the crowd at Quakecom] how many people had spent 20 bucks on a game in the Android store, there was a big difference [to iOS]."

"You’re just not making money in the Android space as you are in the iOS space."

Carmack admitted that id has employed an Android developer with the intention of exploring the format, but that this person is now "stuck on iOS development" for the forseeable future.

Carmack's words follow fellow FPS and 3D engine rival Epic Games’s comments last week about its own reluctance to bring its games to the platform, citing fragmentation and financial concerns as the primary worries.
