Switching the focus from subject to background, chased to chaser, or player to environment is a trick that many creative types use.

It also something that underpins Chinese-based outfit Ant Hive Games The Line HD.

Walk the line

In it, you meet Eddy who's confined to the line from which he was spawned. As his guardian, you are tasked with protecting him from the many dangers he will encounter as he makes his way ever forward.

You don't control Eddy though. You have to draw and erase lines from his environment to create a safe passage for him. You also have access to fire and ice spells to control his speed, and catapults and bumpers to shoot him over and around dangers.

Now updated to version 2.0, the game offers plenty of additions.

There's a new 50 level Casual mode for easier pick-up-and-playability, 50 more challenging levels in the new World, plus a redesign of the user interface and menus, and the ability to freeze and pan around levels for better puzzle visibility.

And players have access to a new scoring system, which supports achievements and leaderboards.

Shanghai Lineman

"The release of The Line HD v.2 marks a new era for the game, supported by a new strategy as well as high quality improvements to heighten the gaming experience," said Florian Garcia, Ant Hive's creative director and veteran of Ubisoft and Red Rocket Games:

"We've had fantastic feedback from players who have tested the new game so far, and look forward to seeing the reception from gamers around the world."

The Line HD is available now for iPad, currently priced 50 percent off at $1.99, €1.59 or £1.19.
