Rumour: No iOS 5 until autumn, cloud services to be unveiled at WWDC
Setting themselves up for the fall
Apple's launch cycle is as predictable as the passing of the seasons themselves. A new iOS is premiered in spring, ready for release in summer.
This year, though, as other signs of spring appear, there's still no word on iOS 5 or the iPhone 5.
And now we may know why. According to two 'solid' sources speaking to TechCrunch, Apple is breaking its pattern and launching iOS 5 in autumn.
Although that's bad news for anyone impatient for the new iOS, the reasons for the delay look intruiging.
For starters, the new iOS will be built heavily aroud the cloud, something that Apple intend to unveil in full at WWDC in June.
Cloud-based services will comprise the bulk of iOS 5's new features, including a location tracker and a 'music locker' service - to be unvelied at Apple's annual music event in autumn.
The launch is also set to coincide with a 'new type of iPad' planned for the latter half of the year.
The iPhone 5 is, as far as we're aware, still on for release shortly after its WWDC unveiling. Presumably that means it will come with a version of iOS 4.X, not iOS 5.
