Motorola Xoom wi-fi edition to retail for $599

Up until today Motorola, had kept schtum over pricing plans for a wi-fi only model of its 10.1-inch Android tablet the Xoom, even after launching the Verizon 3G-enabled version in its home territory a month ago.

But, the cat is now out of the bag, as the US mobile manufacturer announced it will sell the 32GB wi-fi Xoom from March 27th for $599 from Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and others.

To many observers, that figure will seem familiar, since it falls directly in line with the price tag of the equivalent model of Apple's newly released iPad 2.

Missed opportunity

The Honeycomb-toting Xoom hasn't got off to the most formidable of starts - primarily due to the relatively expensive $799 acquisition price - with one analyst at Oppenheimer & Co. telling the Wall Street Journal:

"We believe Motorola missed an opportunity to drive volume by introducing its priciest Xoom first instead of a full range of tablets at the same time, as Apple does.

"We believe Motorola has missed an opportunity to make its mark in the market by initially targeting value versus volume."

The Motorola Xoom is scheduled to land in Europe this spring, with April the expected target date, but pricing for the region has yet to be confirmed.
