Size matters

iPhone nano rumour 'confirmed', MobileMe to be free?

Rumours of a smaller, cheaper iPhone have been confirmed today by the Wall Street Journal.

Speaking with "people familiar with the matter", WSJ's Apple expert Yukari Iwatani Kane gleaned a few tasty facts on the new device.

The device, codenamed N97, will be half the size of the current iPhone 4 and will be much lighter. Despite its diminutive dimensions, it'll pack an edge-to-edge screen and voice controlled navigation.

The new handset should also be much more affordable than the current iPhone 4. The plan is to make the device available to retailers at half the price of the iPhone 4, which should hopefully allow for more realistic pricing.

Alongside this leak, there's also news of a MobileMe revamp. Apple is considering dropping the $99 annual charge for its online storage service, and making it free to everyone.

There are hints at MobileMe being used for music, too. Whether this means you'll be able to use the cloud to stream directly from your iTunes library is unclear. But that would be great news in terms of storage space, were it true.

Of course, even trustworthy leak-spotters like Yukari can get it wrong sometimes. Apple is yet to confirm any of the above information, so don't get too excited.

More news as it comes.
