Xperia Play to be officially unveiled on February 13

In what is rapidly becoming Sony’s season of rumour quashing, the second most talked about handset in the company’s recent history – runner-up only to the NGP - will finally get an official announcement on February 13.

Anybody paying close attention to the ad breaks during last night’s Super Bowl will have spotted Sony Ericsson’s debut commercial for its upcoming Android gaming phone the Xperia Play.

Face-to-face with Xperia Play

And now, the Japanese-Swedish cell phone manufacturer has eradicated the final traces of speculation by revealing on its Facebook page the date of the exponentially hyped, 4-inch blower’s unveiling.

Described by Sony Ericsson on the social networking site as the ‘next gamechanger’, The Handset Formerly Known as PlayStation Phone will be unleashed next Sunday at 6pm, with the joint venture presumably looking to steal a publicity march on its rivals at the ensuing Mobile World Congress.

Play Suite music

Thanks to the NGP event 12 days ago, we already know Xperia Play owners will be able to enjoy downloadable PlayStation content via the PS Suite, stocked initially with classic PlayStation One titles.

Speculation over the Xperia Play’s hardware details, meanwhile, intensified in January, with evidence from Engadget pointing to a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm processor, a 5-megapixel camera, and an 854 x 480 LCD display.

Only six days to go...
