The free iPhone game Trawler Report: Baseball Superstars, Flick Kick Field Goal, Stardunk Gold
|

Another week, another batch of free iPhone games. In the weekly Trawler Report, we bring you some choice cuts from the ever expanding range of App Store freebies.

This week sees lots of hitting, throwing, and kicking, whether it be balls or cute creatures. It’s all very athletic (and, in the latter instance, slightly cruel).

Oh, and this week’s Crap App looks crap, concerns crap, and – indeed – is crap.

Have a thoroughly un-crappy weekend.

Renoki isn’t the first game to attempt to spruce up the whack-a-mole formula - just last month, we featured Whack ‘N Roll on these very pages. It’s still a fine effort, though.

The game spices up the rather limited source material by introducing a couple of RPG-lite elements, such as a shop and an upgradable hammers.

The enemies are sufficiently cute and varied (each needing a varying number of hits according to type) and the presentation is decent. Renoki won’t bowl you over, but it’s a fine free diversion.

In what other game can you combine arcade baseball thrills with deep RPG character development? Okay, you might not particularly want to – we’re hardly in love with the glorified game of rounders over in the UK, after all.

But the Baseball Superstars series is, against all odds, terrifically good fun whether you enjoy the subject sport or not. Its cute art style, accessible gameplay, and generous running time should provide you with hours of fun.

Now that the latest (and best) version is available in ad-funded freemium form, you’ve got every reason to give it a try.

While we’re on the subject of esoteric American sports made palatable for a everyone, why not consider Flick Kick Field Goal Kickoff? It’s a special free edition of PikPok’s excellent finger-punter released just in time for the Super Bowl this weekend.

For those of us who don’t care about about such things, simply revel in Flick Kick’s customarily addictive finger-swiping gameplay. You have to account for distance, angle and wind as you punt ball after ball between those Y-shaped posts.

While it represents a cut-down version of the full game, Kickoff is still a generous package (which includes the new Precision mode) that will keep you swiping for hours.

If you’ve never played Stardunk before, you’re in for a treat. Think of it as an online multiplayer basketball free-throw competition. Set in space. With neon lights and bonus power-ups.

If that sounds odd, well, it is when you stop and think about it. But stopping and thinking about it won’t be an option for about, oooh, around three hours after you’ve started playing.

It’s compulsive stuff, helped by the seamless multiplayer integration and some brilliantly deft controls. This Gold version takes out the ads from the normal version, taking away one of its few annoyances.

Where Should I Put My Outhouse?
By Dream Injector
Type Full

There are strange apps, there are joke apps, and there are absolutely useless apps. Where Should I Put My Outhouse? manages to tick all three of these boxes.

It seems to stem from a kind of tired-old redneck humour. The idea is to take a picture with your iPhone’s camera, then use the app’s external toilet overlay to plan where you want to put said al fresco crapper… actually, no. Forget it. I don’t quite know what its purpose is.

All I know is that it isn’t funny, it isn’t well executed, and I want my money back. What’s that? It’s free? Well then, I want the time, energy, and electricity I wasted downloading it back.
