Apple has at last hit the 10 billion mark for App Store downloads.

The last billion apps were downloaded in less than a week, between the 16th and 22nd of January, according to statistics on Wikipedia.

The first billion downloads occurred on April 23, 2009, with the five billion total hit on June 7, 2010.

Doubtless this surge in sales was aided by Apple's $10,000 Gift Card incentive for the lucky user to download app number 10 billion.

10,000 reasons

The winner turned out to be Gail Davis, of Orpington, Kent, when her daughter downloaded Paper Glider over the weekend.

Gail almost missed out on her prize though, when she dismissed Apple's original phone call as a telesales pitch - an easy mistake to make, but one that could have cost her $10,000.

Luckily her app-savvy daughters were on hand to point out the error of her ways, and the Davis family now have an effective lifetime of free app downloads to look forward to.
