Apple CEO Steve Jobs has taken a leave of absence for medical reasons.

COO Tim Cook has been named to take over Jobs's day to day duties, but the Apple co-founder will remain CEO and will still be involved in the company's important strategic decisions.

This health scare follows Jobs's six-month leave of absence almost exactly two years ago, after which Apple revealed that he was suffering from a hormone imbalance.

In an email sent to Apple employees, Jobs said: "At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health.”

Jobs goes on to say “I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011."

Despite his health concerns, Jobs spoke of his intention to return to the role that has brought Apple so much success. “I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can” he said.

Apple hasn't stated the exact nature of this latest medical problem. Indeed, Jobs's email ends with the statement: “In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy."

You can't say fairer than that.
