The long-rumoured PlayStation Phone is still officially speculation, as Sony made no mention of such a device during its annual presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

However, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Kaz Hirai did confirm that work is being done on a line of smartphones and tablets.

"[We have] a variety of new strategic products and services including tablets currently in development as well as smartphones, all the while of course integrating the know-how and the assets that we've accumulated from our PlaySation business."

In other words, they're working on a PlayStation Phone or PlayStation Pad. Take your pick.

The fact that the head of Sony's PlayStation division would be tapped for such a statement clearly indicates the company is seeking to broaden its approach to portable gaming.
