CES 2011: LG shows off two new Android phones – Optimus Black and Optimus 2X

As expected, LG has used its CES showcase event to show off its two hotly anticipated Android devices.

The Optimus 2X has been causing quite a stir over the past few months, with plenty of leaked specs and images to drool over, culminating in an official announcement last month. We should see a global roll-out over the coming months.

The main reason for our excitement is the handset’s dual-core Tegra 2 processor, which should be the first (though by no means last) of its kind and a massive leap in performance over the current generation. It’ll also boast full 1080p video capabilities and will run on Android 2.2 (initially at least).

Details of the Optimus Black also leaked out late last year, and now LG has used the Las Vegas megashow to officially announce it.

This is the phone that was shown literally outshining the Galaxy S and iPhone 4, thanks to a staggering Nova display that produces 700 nits of brightness. Despite such radiance, it’ll consume 15 per cent less battery power than your average display, according to LG.

All this comes in a package that’s just 9.2mm thick. Yep, that makes it the thinnest smartphone around. While we’re talking firsts, the Optimus Black will feature the first 2MP front-facing camera.

The LG Optimus Black will be out globally in the first half of 2011.

All this marks out quite a turnaround for the Korean manufacturer. We'll have to wait until we've had some hands-on time with both units to be sure, but the company is clearly aiming to join the leading pack of Android handset developers that includes Samsung, HTC and Motorola.
