Renowned video game creator and self-confessed mammal-obsessive Jeff Minter has released his latest game. From the developer of Tempest 2000 and Space Giraffe comes Minotaur Rescue, available now on iPhone and iPad.

As usual, Minter’s latest game is a psychedelic rainbow of colours and pixels, all packaged in an old skool Atari-themed style. The main event is a co-operative pixelated space shooter where you battle asteroids and marauding saucers in a fight to rescue endangered minotaurs.

There are also bonus extra games based on and inspired by super retro Atari games. Those are TANKS! and JETS!

The universal app features two player co-op on iPhone and four players on iPad. OpenFeint and Game Center leaderboards and achievements track your progress against players around the world.

Minotaur Rescue (or Solar Minotaur Rescue Frenzy to give the game its full name) is the first step in Minter’s “Minotaur Project”, a plan to create a whole series of iOS games in the style of old-fashioned game systems.

You can grab Minotaur Rescue on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad now for 59p / 99c / €0.79c.
