At this stage in the App Store's lifespan, pretty much all the generic games have been made many times over, meaning it's hard to choose a decent name, let alone get visibility.

Presumably that's the reason Finger Arts has called its new release (4) in a Row. Technically the (4) is a 4 in a circle, making it hard to search for.

But the effort is well worth it if you like such Connect Four games and not merely because the game is currently free. It's also very well presented with pretty much everything you could desire from the (4) in a Row genre.

Matching up

Of course, the gameplay has you dropping coloured counters onto a board, trying to get four in row, whether horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

There's four choices of difficulty, while the game is stat heavy in terms of giving you points for your performance and logging how many games you win.

Points are awarded based on the number of adjacent counters to the one you've just dropped and the multiplier in force at the time. This starts at x28 and then slowly drops over time, providing a nice balance of making as many moves as possible while playing at speed.

This information is stored locally, as well as being made available more widely via Game Center and OpenFeint if you want to compare and compete with the world.

There are achievements, a Play and Pass multiplayer mode, and you can ask for hints too.

(4) in a Row is out now for iPhone, and currently free with in-game adverts.
