It's become something of a gaming cliche to point at culturally specific Japanese releases with a mixture of delight and bewilderment.

And on first impressions, Save Toshi is just such a game, as you have to get the crazy cute dancing girl onto the dancefloor by solving the mazey 3D physics puzzles she's standing within by firing balls at it.

In this way, you can destroy or move certain blocks causing the whole thing to come crashing down, while lofting, sliding, bouncing or dropping Toshi into the place where she can strut her funky stuff.

If you mess up, you get the message 'Toshi is dead'.

Catch the rhythm

It's beautifully zany, colourful and - amazingly for today at least - free. Well worth snapping up then as not only it is fun to play, but there are 100 levels to play through.

The game also has a hint system for when things get too complex for you, while high scores and achievements are handled using OpenFeint.

But back to where we started. What's the reason this release from developer Nitako can't be pointed at as a wacky culturally specific Japanese game?

Nitako is based in Israel.

Save Toshi is an universal app for iPhone and iPad and currently free. You can check out the gameplay video below.
