Sony has announced plans to release the Official PlayStation App for both iPhone and Android devices in the near future.

According to Sony, the app will be compatible with both iPhone and iPod touch devices running at least iOS 4, with the majority of Android handhelds running OS 1.6 and above, also being suitable.

The initial release of the PlayStation app will grant the ability to show-off your PSN trophies, keep up-to-date with your friends' games, and check on their online status.

The app will also act as a portal to all the latest news and announcements from the European PlayStation blog, which you can then share with your friends via social networks such as Facebook.

Version 1.0 of the Official PlayStation App will be available in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands, with support for further countries expected in a future version. Sony has already begun work on this, with plans to include most SCEE countries, languages, and the ability to add comments to the PlayStation Blog.

Although an exact release date for this app is yet to be given, it has been confirmed that the app will be free to download.
