Monkey Island Tales 1 for iPad washes up on the App Store

We knew December 16th was going to bring an avalanche of high profile iPhone releases as publishers big and small scramble to get their Christmas no. 1 contenders onto the App Store in time for the shopping frenzy. We didn't, however, see this one coming.

Along with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, LucasArts's Monkey Island Tales 1 HD arrives more or less entirely out of the blue today.

Developed by Telltale Games, the studio responsible for the Tales of Monkey Island series on PC, Mac, and Xbox 360 as well as Sam & Max Episode 1: the Penal Zone and Wallace and Gromit: The Last Resort on iPad, Monkey Island Tales 1 HD looks like an iPad adaptation of the first in the Curse of Monkey Island games.

The plot involves you, as Guybrush, inadvertently contaminating a Caribbean island with evil mojo extracted from Guybrush's nemesis LeChuck and attempting to come up with a way of preventing the island's inhabitants from turning into monsters.

While we haven't played the game yet, we're willing to bet that doing this entails combining objects with other objects and talking to people.

Guybrush and LeChuck are joined by series regulars Elaine, Stan, and the Voodoo Lady as well as several new characters. Telltale writes in the App Store description for Monkey Island Tales 1 HD that it's the first in a five-part saga, which would indicate that four more are coming. It costs £3.99 / $ 6.99.
