Carmack: RAGE approved, should be on App Store tomorrow

John Carmack has tweeted that high score on-rails shooter RAGE has been approved by the iTunes guardians at Apple, and 'should' be available to download on the App Store from tomorrow.

The game is a special spin-off edition of the upcoming console shooter, designed specifically for iPhone.

It’s all about showing off Doom-daddy Carmack’s coding prowess, as his team of coders squeezes the RAGE engine onto iPhone and brings some of the best graphics ever to the pintsize device.

It’s based on the console game’s post apocalyptic game show, Mutant Bash TV, as you try to survive in a wasteland of baddies and rack up a high score in the process.

Picking shots, dodging attacks, timing your reloads and collecting bonus pick-ups are all essential to topping the leaderboards.

Carmack spoke indepth about the game at the end of October.

Pay per pixel

More importantly, we also know how much it will cost.

If you’ve got an iPad or iPhone 4 , you’ll have to pay a few more pennies for the privilege of high resolution textures: £1.19 / $1.99 / €1.59 to be exact.

If you’re stuck on a 3GS or lower, you’ll only need to fork over 59p / 99c / €0.79c.

Carmack was also responsible for the iPhone’s critically lauded Doom Resurrection, making RAGE his second proper stab at development on the device.

He's also hinted at the possibility of seeing the game on Android, but Windows Phone 7 support is very unlikely.
