When iOS 4.2 hits iPad, brace yourself for some big updates to your favourite HD apps. As the bumper new firmware brings both multitasking and Game Center support to the tablet, games will be on the receiving end of some huge new features.

Take Flight Control HD, which will use Apple’s achievement and leaderboard service, Game Center, to give iPad gamers some online mulitplayer.

Much like the game’s current local multiplayer, over Bluetooth and wi-fi, you can either go head to head in Versus mode or team up and handle the deluge of air traffic together. You’ll be able to invite a pal, or if you’re a billy-no-mates you can be assigned another random player, elsewhere in the world.

Also, the update brings achievements and leaderboards on Game Center, as well as multitasking support.

Developer Firemint hopes the update will be available as soon as Apple delivers iOS 4.2 to iPad owners. There’s no firm date yet for the new firmware, but Apple has released the gold master edition to developers, and has opened up the floodgates for submissions of Game Center, Air Print, and Multitasking supported apps. It’ll be any day now.

Don't have the game yet? Flight Control HD is available now on iPad for £2.99 / $4.99 / €3.99.
