Things aren't going great at Nintendo at the moment.

It's just posted its numbers for April to September and sales are down 34 per cent to $4.5 million. And instead of the nice $1.4 billion it made in half year profits a year ago, it's made a loss of $25 million.

But with $17 billion in the bank, it's not going to go bust any time soon.

DS slow down

Of course, the reason for the drop in sales is the fall in interest for both the DS (sales down 42 per cent to 6.7 million units for April to September), and Wii (down 14 per cent to 5 million).

DSi was hit particularly badly, with sales down 68 per cent to 2.3 million. Nintendo sold 3.2 million of the oversized DSi XLs, however.

DS game sales were down 23 per cent to 54.8 million units, with Pokemons Black and White, being the best sellers, at over 4 million units in Japan. They are yet to be released in the US and Europe,.

Still, considering Nintendo has now sold a total of 135 million DSes, it was inevitable it would start to run out of new people to buy the console at some point, especially considering the growth of powerful smartphones and other devices such as the iPod touch.

Good thing the 3DS is out next year.
