The iPhone may enable intuitive interface design thanks to its touchscreen, but the lack of keyboard and mouse means it's more difficult to enable user generated content.

It's something that the makers of Leveldream Maker - an app that lets you create and share simple iPhone games - have had to deal with.

Baking up a storm

That said, the app seems to be fairly limited in terms of the type of games you can make.

Topdown 2D dungeon style game - or Pac-Man clones - seem to be the most obvious outcome of its drag and drop creation method.

Enabled mechanics include using keys to open doors, springs to move blocks, teleportation, deactivating mines, and cutting through fences and vegetation. Of course, using weapons to kill enemies and other players also feature heavily.

Five game modes are supported: one player, two player co-operative, two players deathmatch, two players one objective, and two players multiple objectives.

Make and share

In terms of how you present these options, 130 graphical icon blocks are provided to use to create walls, floors or items, plus you can input photos from your iPhone. You can use up to 10 maps in a game, and each one consists of a grid of 40 x 20 elements.

Once you're happy with your game, you can upload it to a central server, where it can be shared by anyone with a copy of Leveldream Maker, or the free Leveldream Player app.

At the moment, things seems pretty sparse there, with only two games of not entirely impressive quality listed, but presumably more will be uploaded in future.

Leveldream Maker is available now for iPhone and iPod touch, priced $2.99, €2.39 or £1.79.
