Being designed for next-gen devices

Android version of Dungeon Defenders won’t run on current handsets

We reported yesterday that the gorgeous Unreal Engine 3-powered Dungeon Defenders would be making its way to Android as well as iPhone.

We’ve just received a tip that might knock the wind out of Android owners’ sails – the game won’t run on any Android handset currently on the market. It’s being designed instead for the next generation of devices, which will sport the Tegra 2 GPU.

Nexus One user Slighmd went onto the Trendy Entertainment forum to ask whether his beloved handset – which, after all, is still technically Google’s flagship device – would be supported. He got this response:

“Currently the Android version of DunDef only runs on next-gen Android devices using the Tegra2 GPU (they are not even on the market yet, but are expected this holiday season).”

This would perhaps lend credence to the opinion that the current generation of the Snapdragon processor (which powers most high-end Android devices) isn’t quite up to scratch, particularly when it comes to shunting 3D graphics around.

However, that doesn’t explain the abandonment of the Samsung Galaxy S (and its variants), which can more than hold its own against the iPhone 4. You could argue that it wouldn’t make sense to support such a limited number of devices, but at least it’s a known quantity, unlike the unreleased Tegra 2 devices.

Trendy Entertainment did provide a little hope that “before we ship we may make a version that supports current-gen Android devices including the HTC & Nexus,” but the lack of certainty and inference of compromise will no doubt stick in many Android gamers’ gullets.
