Classic games available for iPhone as in-app purchases in Capcom Arcade
Capcom's first freemium title digs into the back catalogue
Capcom has caught the freemium fever - Capcom Arcade, a forthcoming free app will offer classic games via in-app purchase.
The Japanese publisher plans on releasing Street Fighter II, 1942, Ghouls'N Ghosts, and Commando as paid downloads within the Capcom Arcade app when it's released later this year.
If you're unwilling to plunk down money for these old games, you're able to play them for free using tokens. Each day you're granted a few tokens to spend playing games. When those run out, you can either purchase more tokens or outright buy any of the games for unlimited play.
Capcom has not announced pricing for tokens, but Slide to Play reports that unlimited access to individual titles will cost around £1.99/$3.99.
While Capcom Arcade will be the first, the concept of releasing old arcade games in a freemium bundle isn't a new one. SEGA recently toyed with the idea of a Genesis emulator app, but cancelled the title without explanation.
Capcom Arcade will be available for iPhone and iPod touch in November for free.
