Apple has launched Game Center, a new portable gaming social network designed specifically for iPhone and iPod touch.

Downloading the new iOS 4.1 for your iPhone or iPod touch adds the service to your device, placing a convenient icon on your handset's home screen.

Beyond unifying iPhone and iPod touch games under an official banner via your iTunes account, Game Center offers achievements, leaderboards, and multiplayer matchmaking.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs hailed the service as "built for multiplayer gaming."

Be aware, though, as Game Center is only operable on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and second/third/fourth-generation iPod touchs. First-generation iPhone and iPod touch handsets, as well as iPhone 3G are not supported.

Game Center is available in the iOS 4.1 update, which currently can be downloaded in the US. UK availability is uncertain, although Apple has confirmed launch today.
