With Samsung announcing one million Galaxy S Android smartphones shipped in the US, we've been wondering what's going on with the company's own special sauce OS, bada.

The first bada device - the Wave S8500 - seems to be popular in Europe and Asia, with over one million shipped. Certainly I'm fairly impressed with mine - the screen is excellent, as are the gaming capabilities.

Now Samsung has announced its second bada phone.

The Wave 723 drops the S8500's beautiful Super AMOLED display for a 3.2-inch WQVGA TFT-LCD touchscreen.

It has a similar 5-megapixel camera with LED Flash and auto-focus, and the usual 3G, wi-fi, Bluetooth and USB ports. It runs TouchWiz 3.0 and offers Samsung's array of widgets and social feeds.

Cut of your cloth

Demonstrating its mass market price sensitivity, it only comes with 90MB of memory though, which isn't much considering games such as Modern Combat: Sandstorm weigh in at 250MB.

"The launch of the Wave 723 clearly underlines our commitment to smartphone products on different platforms and forms part of our strategy to deliver a wide range of handsets designed to suit a multitude of users," said Simon Stanford, head of Samsung Mobile UK & Ireland.

"It's also the latest handset to support our open platform, bada, which gives developers new opportunities for the creation of apps".

The Wave 723 will be available in mainland Europe in September, but later in the UK.

It's also thought that Samsung will release lower spec Wave 525 and 533 devices around the same time.
