Telltale Games has had an uneven history on iPad. Its first release, launch title Sam & Max Episode 1: The Penal Zone, fared indifferently thanks in part to technical problems, and the same fate befell Wallace and Gromit: The Last Resort a few months later.

Puzzle Agent, which is out today in New Zealand for iPhone and iPad, is the developer's latest effort to strike touchscreen gold. The game follows the exploits of FBI agent Nelson Tethers as he investigates a series of incidents at a rubber factory in Scoggins, Minnesota. The ensuing adventure takes the form of a series of puzzles.

The iPad version of Puzzle Agent was originally supposed to arrive in June, when it was released for PC, Mac, and WiiWare. Given the technical woes suffered by Telltale's other iPad ports, it's reasonable to suppose that the extra time went into making this one perfect.

Reviews for Puzzle Agent on other formats have been mixed, averaging 69 on Metacritic. However, amongst those is an Edge 7/10 and a GamesTM 70, while specialist PC magazine PC Gamer awarded it a respectable 74.

Check back in a few days to see what Pocket Gamer gives it. Puzzle Agent is out now in New Zealand for iPhone and iPad, meaning that it'll be available in the UK at midnight.

The iPhone version costs $6.49, translating to $4.99 in the UK and £2.99 in the UK. The iPad version costs $9.99, translating to $6.99 and £3.99.
