More details on the official Android 2.2 update for Galaxy S surfaced today, showing off some extra features Samsung has added to the UI.

Chief among these is a new screen lock function to prevent the image twisting around like a madman when you pick up the phone to turn off the alarm (lifted straight from the iPhone) and the ability to use pinch-to-zoom on the homepage in order to view all widgets and apps without flicking around (lifted from HTC’s SenseUI).

In the ‘not just copied from someone else’ department is a revision to the already decent keyboard, which allows accents and numbers to be accessed by holding down the relevant key, and the ability to include Gmail Groups in the contacts.

The Android 2.2 update for the Galaxy S is expected to land at the end of September, after having been first announced by Google at the I/O Developers conference way back in May.

Currently only 4.5 per cent of Android users are on the latest version of the mobile platform, with Gingerbread (3.0) expected to be formally announced later in the year, followed by Honeycomb (3.1) in 2011.
