Visible pixels are so last year

iPhone 4's screen shown off in absurdly high res photos

Following the iPhone 4's little coming out party at WWDC last week, plenty of snap happy journos have chucked up photos, videos, and impressions of the new device for those of us stuck at home.

To the casual ogler, the screen impresses when held up next to the now-ancient 3GS. Even in the judging eye of a high resolution camera, the iPhone 4's new icons are smooth and free of jaggy aliasing, while the 3GS's buttons look like they're made of Lego.

Prolific blogger Robert Scoble uploaded a humongous 5600-odd pixel photo of the iPhone 4 browsing The New York Times in Safari. You can pick out each pore and cell and DNA strand on the phone holder's hand, but pixels on the device are far trickier to spot.

He also uploaded a lovely video, showing off the screen's ability to render the letter 'm' without a jagged edge in sight.

There was a big hubbub last week surrounding Steve Jobs's claims that the iPhone 4's pixels were not differentiable by the human retina. Wired posted the headline "iPhone 4’s ‘Retina’ Display Claims Are False Marketing", but Hubble telescope engineer Phil Plait (he knows a little about resolution) thinks the screen is pretty darn close to Jobs's 'retina' moniker.

Either way, the photos tell the real story. See them below.
