Motorola’s next Android-powered handset, the XT720, is coming to Europe later this month – and it’ll pack a much greater punch than was first expected.

Although we reported that the handset would feature a quicker processor than the Milestone upon which it's based, initial reports from Motorola suggested that the processor would run at the same underclocked rate of 550MHz.

Still no slouch, but well short of the 1GHz beasts currently found at the cutting edge.

It seems that Motorola has had a late change of heart, though, and has decided to give the device a speed boost at the probable expense of a little battery life.

The XT720 will feature the same processor as before, but this time bumped up to 720MHz. The RAM will also be doubled to 512MB.

All of which is in keeping with the device's status as a true multimedia phone. The ‘720’ of the title doesn’t so much refer to the processor speed as the device’s 720p HD video recording capabilities.

Aside from that, the device will feature an 8MP camera and an HDMI port for viewing your videos and pictures in pin-sharp clarity on your telly.

The XT720 first saw life in South Korea as the Motoroi, but it was revealed around the time of the phone’s MWC 2010 showing that the device would be making its way to the west in a slightly enhanced form.
